“it is product of a poorly done desk job”- Tinubu rejects EU report on the presidential election.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rejected the report of the European Union Election Observation Mission [EU-EOM], stating that they are convinced that the final report on the election by the EU is “a product of a poorly done desk job that is reliant on a few instances of skirmishes in less than 1000 polling unit out of over 176,000 where nigerians voted on election day.”
The statement released by the presidential spokesman Dele Alake on Sunday noted that the union did not provide substantial evidence that is enough to question the fairness of the 2023 presidential election outcomes. He stated that the EU had limited coverage of the election by their observers and the report was concluded based on rumors, hearsays, cocktails of prejudiced and uninformed social media commentaries.
“EU-EOM observed the elections through 11 Abuja-based analysts, and 40 election observers spread across 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. With the level of personnel deployed, which was barely an average of one person per state, we wonder how EU-EOM independently monitored elections in over 176,000 polling units across Nigeria.”
“We would like to know and even ask the EU, how it reached the conclusions in the submitted final report with the very limited coverage of the elections by their observers who, without doubt, relied more on rumors, hearsay, cocktails of prejudiced and uninformed social media commentaries and opposition talking heads.”
“We are convinced that what EU_EOM called the final report on our recent elections is a product of a poorly done desk job that relied heavily on a few instances of skirmishes in less than 1000 polling units out of 176,000 where Nigerians voted on election day.”
The EU report in the report exposed the lapses and weaknesses in the presidential election stating that there were act of violence and thuggery which hindered a free and fair election while also commending the improvement in the use of technologies by the electoral commission. The Eu also recommended legal and operational reforms to enhance transparency, inclusiveness and accountability in future elections.
“We are particularly concerned about the need for reform in six areas that we have identified as priority recommendations and that, if implemented, could contribute to improvements in election administration”
Mr Alake in the statement, said that the president and his team strongly rejects the report. “We strongly reject, in its entirety, any notion and idea from any organization, group or individual remotely suggesting that the 2023 election was fraudulent,”
He reiterated that the 2023 presidential election won by president Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressive Congress, was credible, peaceful, free, fair and the best in Nigeria since 1999. In the concluding part of the statement, he urged the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in their assessments and let the country breathe.
“As a country we have put the elections behind us. President Tinubu is facing the arduous task of nation-building, while those who have reasons to challenge the process continue to do so through the courts’”
“We urge the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in all their assessments of the internal affairs of our country and allow Nigeria to breathe.”
