Bwala: Tinubu Is Holding And Embarrassing The Suspended Anti-Corruption Boss While Appointing Known Criminals To Cabinet Positions.
The spokesperson for the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 elections, Daniel Bwala, has questioned President Bola Tinubu's administration for arresting and detaining the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, while criminal suspects are being appointed to ministerial and legislative positions.
On Sunday, Bwala tweeted to Tinubu asking him to intervene on behalf of the suspended and arrested EFCC head, arguing that the investigation into which he is currently engaged does not entail a plot to overthrow the government of Nigeria.
“I appeal to Mr President to intervene in the case involving Abdulrasheed Bawa, the EFCC Chair. Whatever he is being investigated, I believe non involves attempt to over throw the government.
“This pattern of arresting, detaining and humiliating Anti-graft boss whilst the suspects become ministers and lawmakers will eventually kill the very institution of the EFCC,” the PDP chieftain said.
Since then, he has been held in custody.
The anti-graft agency under Bawa's leadership announced an investigation against former Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle for alleged corruption, allocation of phantom contracts, and diversion of over N70 billion less than a month before Bawa's suspension.
After the former governor made what the EFCC called "farcical allegations" of corruption in the agency's fight against corruption, including in the disposal of assets and the plea bargain procedure, the EFCC said it was making the investigation public.
However, not long after it was revealed that the EFCC would be investigating Matawalle, the agency's chairman was suspended indefinitely. He was taken into custody at a later time and has been held there ever since.
President Tinubu has nominated Matawalle, who is under investigation for corruption, to a cabinet position despite the ongoing probe.
