Enugu Legislator Suspended for Taking N1m from Internally Displaced Persons

Aluagbo Maxwell, an Enugu State councillor who represents Umualor Ward, has been suspended for allegedly embezzling N1.1 million intended for internally displaced people (IDPs) in his community.

Nnabuike Ugwu, the majority leader of the council, made the motion to suspend the legislator during Thursday's plenary session while speaking on behalf of Neke Ward II.

The community claimed in a letter to the Council that Aluagbo had embezzled money intended to provide palliative and relief assistance to internally displaced people (IDPs) as a result of the Eha Amufu-Fulani crisis.

According to reports, the funds were deposited into Aluagbo Maxwell's UBA account on March 3, 2023.

Renus Nnaji, the leader of the council, criticised the claim that a member had engaged in such serious misbehaviour and promised that the Council will look into it carefully.

He said it was sad that the same politician was also accused of being the brains behind the disclosure of information from a closed-door house meeting to the public and on social media, subjecting the council to widespread derision.

He established a three-person committee to look into the two accusations made against the suspended MP as a result.

In order to assist the council in making a final decision regarding the legislator, the committee was instructed to provide its findings to the council as soon as feasible
