A POEM ABOUT COVID-19; A MUST READ

A POEM ABOUT COVID-19; A MUST READ

SUDDENLY; ALL OF A SUDDEN:

New York 'the city that never sleeps' is now asleep, all day quiet.

In Lagos Nigeria, the African boom city, a gridlock curse is broken.

Paris the 'center of romance' lives in echos of tranquility.

Rome 'the eternal city' is deserted and eerily quiet.

Madrid, a teeming city of bustling landmarks has come to a standstill.

Disney is out of magic.

London is caged in silence, the Queen speaks to her people from a hidden room.

The city of Moscow with all its science and armoury is helpless.

Jerusalem, O Jerusalem! The resurrection has come and you keep so quiet.

Mecca is empty! Nobody  to 'stone the devil'.

The great walls of China is no longer a fortress.

The Great nations with all their armaments and warheads appear powerless and speechless.

The developed world suddenly on its knees.

The same Middle East that is busy building and stockpiling nuclear warheads to destroy the world are same people looking for how to save the world.

Churches, mosques,  great parks, monuments, stadiums are filled with unfilled spaces.

The busiest places at present were hitherto the most dreaded: hospitals and cemeteries.

The famous football leagues, the fashion shows, exotic weddings festivals - all lost to memory.

Celebrities have run out of celebrations. Our status, our titles - the Igwes, the Hon. Chief Barristers, the Dr. and Barr. (Mrs), the Professor Apostles, the do-you-know-who-I-ams, the all privileged positions are stale.

There seems to be no hiding place from the invincible enemy until we are all tamed of our excesses.

With all our boastful 'citizenships' we cannot step out of our houses. With all our savings in gold and cash, we can only buy food to eat and toilet papers to take care of the waste.

We usually went to watch animals in cages, now animals roam our empty streets, watching us in our 'cages'.

With our expensive clothes and shoes, the expensive automobiles, the make-overs and show of beauty, our house clothes and pyjamas suddenly become the latest fashion.

For the first time in history of Christendom, a pope celebrated Palm Sunday liturgy without the participation of the faithfuls, amidst tears of a broken heart.

AND despite all these 'oddities'...the world still goes on; the sun still shines; the birds still sing; the rains still come; clock still ticks.

When this long night finally gets over and a new day sets in, let us not forget the lesson of the long night - that the only essential element is LIFE, the rest are not just dispensable prefixes and suffixes, but - busy emptiness of VANITY!
