The Ajax footballer Abdelhak Nouri, a midfielder who collapsed on the pitch and had been in a coma for two years, eight months and 19 days is “awake” and “communicating”, it has been revealed.
Abdelhak ‘Appie’ Nouri suffered a cardiac arrhythmia during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen in July 2017 and was rushed to hospital and placed in a medically-induced coma.
The family have confirmed that the Ajax star is now being treated at home after suffering permanent brain damage, while offering a positive update on his progress since waking up from a coma.
Abdelhak rose through the youth ranks at the Johan Cruyff ArenA before graduating to the senior squad in 2015.
He went on to take in nine competitive first-team appearances for Ajax, before his career was cruelly cut short during the club's pre-season tour of the Austrian Alps in July 2017.
